Technology transforms teaching and learning? How can we tell?

Since ICTs first appeared in classrooms, a big question for educators has been whether the promise of educational technologies translates into increased teacher effectiveness and improved student achievement. This is often driven by accountability demands – justifying the considerable expense associated with ICT provision.

There are many points of view but one thing that has been established by researchers looking for answers around this question is that impact is complex and technology cannot be viewed as a single independent variable.

This session will examine the research and will consider a set of dimensions that may be indicators of e-readiness and e-maturity. Participants will have an opportunity to contrast several models which are currently in use and have the potential to be adopted or adapted by schools approaching this thorny issue. The importance of establishing baselines and the implications for teacher professional learning will also be considered.
