Abstract
This paper examines the relationship of science education to the development of scientifically literate citizens. It discusses specific contributions of contemporary technology tools to the development of scientific literacy. The 5E framework is unpacked as a planning tool that can support learners in science education to refine their oracy and understanding.

Contemporary technologies provide science educators with a range of ways of engaging students in their learning. How these new options may support, sustain and enhance the learning outcomes of science students is discussed. The goal of using technologies in science is not to simply use the technology tools like scientists do, but to utilise these technology tools to deepen student participation and cognitive engagement.

This paper examines the contributions of Web 2.0 offerings, like blogs, wikis and podcasting. The Web 2.0 tools support students to visit and re-visit their science understandings, as they author themselves into their products and publish their enriched output with sound, movement and images.
