Linux is here! Where are you?

Daniel Jitnah

Linux provided an alternative environment to Windows and Mac OS X. So why should you use it? Best way is to work this out for yourself and reasons will vary for different individuals. So here is an opportunity for you to experience it in a safe way and help you work it out.

In this Workshop, participants will have the opportunity to quickly set up a Virtual Ubuntu Linux environment on their computer (Mac or Windows Laptop) using the VirtualBox virtualisation software. (see below). Participants will then be able to quickly explore the Ubuntu desktop, and learn how to install additional software, and carry out some useful basic configuration.

Given the nature of the workshop tasks, there will be a period when the Laptop will run non-attended for a while. This will provide an opportunity for a Q&A session and discussion on the value of Open Source and Linux in Education and at home, and ensuing issues. The presenter, who is a long term Linux User will be available to answer questions.

Prerequisites:

1. Your laptop must have at least 4Gb of free Harddisk space (more is better) for a minimal Ubuntu installation
2. Participants need to download the VirtualBox software before attending the workshop. Goto

and download the latest Windows or OS X version of VirtualBox.

The VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License allows you to freely download and use VirtualBox for personal and academic use. (refer to website)
