Web Tools for Flexible and Effective Teaching and Learning

The quantity of Web 2.0 tools available for users can sometimes be overwhelming. How do we keep up with the trends from blogs, Twitter, Ning, Facebook or Google Apps? Are we investing our energy in the wrong application? Why adopt something today that will be replaced by something new tomorrow? The applications keep coming and require teachers to take a flexible approach in order to allow for experimentation and creativity. However, without a focus on teaching and learning, these tools do nothing more than provide the 'bells and whistles' in the classroom. In this presentation, I will focus on the opportunities created by a range of Web 2.0 applications and discuss the learning experiences of the staff and students who are using these applications at Carey. I will also discuss what I consider to be the key requirements or criteria when choosing applications to introduce into the classroom, with a focus on effective and transformative teaching and learning.

Comments

I very much appreciated your comments about the use of Web 2.0 tools as a means to an end and not as ends in themselves. I got caught up for a while in the spin cycle when I had classes making animations, videos, GoogleMap mashups, wordles etc. and for a time forgot that there were outcomes and discussions beyond that. I think I'm better at it now, and have the task of getting my colleagues to move through similar transitions. Thankyou for making me feel that I am not alone on this journey.

An excellent session - seeing student examples of using Web2 tools was very benefical - not just using the tools for the sake of using them but using them with meaning.
